How about a smile or a wave?
During the many hours I spent outside last week, cleaning up after Hurricane Ike, I was reassured and grateful to see our police force making regular pass-bys in their cars, checking for problems.
It did occur to me, however, to wish that some of the officers were on bicycles or scooters, able to stop for a moment, make contact, pass along information, give a hand. There's something a little disturbing about being the object of stares from behind sunglasses behind closed windows in a moving car. I don't think the force is currently making the connections with Granville residents that is part of great policing. Even a smile or a wave would be welcome!

I wave but they seldom wave back
I agree. Why can't our police walk, ride bikes, ride scooters, or even ride horses while on patrol in the central village? And why can't they drive smaller, fuel efficient cars when they must drive?
Our police should take off the sunglasses that permit them to hide from us, actually smile now and then, and stop and chat with us.
Shouldn't they get to know us and permit us to know them?
After all, we pay their salaries.
